ABOUT THE COMPANY – DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY AND FISHERIES
The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) was formed in 2009 and is responsible for managing and supporting the agricultural sector in South Africa, and ensuring that all citizen have access to safe and nutritious food.
DAFF is under the responsibility of Senzeni Zokwana, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Some of the departments goals include: efficient and effective governance; sustained and sufficient management of natural resources; contributions to the countries economic growth and development; successful risk management systems and national regulatory services; greater production of timber products, fibre and food; a united and transformed sector.
ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The DAFF bursary programme is aimed at Undergraduate and Postgraduate students, who are studying within a field which is considered a “critical scarce skill” within the agricultural, forestry and fisheries sector.
Bursaries will be awarded within the following fields of study:

- Forestry and Wood Science (BSc)
- Plant Pathology (BSc)

- Viticulture and Oenology (BSc)
- Bioresource Engineering (Agricultural Engineering) (BSc)
- Veterinary Science (BVSc)
- Marine Science (National Diploma)
- Forestry (National Diploma)
- Food Technology (National Diploma)
Postgraduate studies:
- All agriculture, forestry and fisheries fields linked to DAFF priority research projects (BSc, BTech, MSc, DTech, Hons MTech, PhD)
MORE ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE, TERTIARY INSTITUTES & SELECTION
The following expenses will be covered by DAFF: tuition, prescribed books, accommodation, meals and a monthly allowance.
Postgraduate students will also receive a monthly allowance for accommodation and meals and be appointed a mentor.
Please note that certain fields of study are limited to the following tertiary institutions:
- BSc Bioresource Engineering (Agricultural Engineering): only available at the University of KwaZulu-Natal
- BSc Oceanography and Marine Biology: only available at the University of Cape Town
- BSc Viticulture and Oenology/ Plant Pathology, BSc Forestry and Wood Science: only available at the University of Stellenbosch
- BSc Ichthyology/ Fisheries Science: only available at Rhodes University
- BVSc Veterinary Science: only available at the University of Pretoria
- National Diploma Marine Science: only available at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology
- National Diploma Forestry: only available at the Nelson Mandela University
- National Diploma Food Technology: only available at the University of Johannesburg/ Cape Peninsula University of Technology/ Durban University of Technology/ Tshwane University of Technology

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- South African citizen
- Completed Matric OR currently in Matric
- Studying or intend on studying within one of the aforementioned fields of study
- Marine Science, Forestry, Food Technology students: achieved a minimum of level 4/ 50-59% for Mathematics and Physical Science in Matric
- Marine Biology, Oceanography and Marine Biology, Ichthyology/ Fisheries Science, Forestry and Wood Science, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Food Science, Viticulture and Oenology (BSc) students: achieved a minimum of level 5/ 60-69% for Mathematics and Physical Science in Matric
- Bioresource Engineering (Agricultural Engineering), Veterinary Science students: achieved a minimum of level 6/ 70-79% for Mathematics and Physical Science in Matric
- NOT a staff members of the department
- *Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged students and those from poor and rural communities. Disabled applicants are also encouraged to apply
