South African National Space Agency (SANSA) Bursary 2019 – 2020



ABOUT THE COMPANY – SANSA

The South African National Space Agency (SANSA), established in 2010, are a public entity and government agency operating under the National Department of Science and Technology (DST).
SANSA are responsible developing and promoting aeronautics and aerospace space research, with the companies main focus on utilising data acquired from remote sensing via satellites and other projects to provide assessment about fires, flooding, environmental phenomena and resource management both within the country and throughout Africa.

ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

Each year SANSA provides bursaries to postgraduate Science and Engineering students, who are passionate and want to excel in their chosen field of study.
Bursaries will be awarded to Postgraduate students in the following fields of study:
Earth Observation (Hons/ PhD/ MSc):
  • Earth Systems Science with Remote Sensing
  • Earth Observations in Ecosystems Accounting
  • Remote Sensing
  • Geospatial Programming
  • Remote Sensing in Environmental Management (including Agriculture and Rangelands, Water Resource Management, Marine and Oceans, Mineral Resourcing and Spatial Planning)
Space Science (Hons/ PhD/ MSc/ MPhil):
  • Modelling geomagnetically induced currents in power systems
  • Ionospheric and radio propagation modeling
  • Multi-scale ionospheric physics, structure and dynamics
  • Multi-instrument studies of space weather
  • Antarctic radar studies of climate change
  • Theory of waves and solitons in plasma
Engineering (PhD/ MSc/ MTech/ MEng/ DTech):
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Aeronautical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronic Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Mechatronic Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Software Engineering
  • Software Systems Engineering
  • Systems Engineering
  • Space Engineering
  • Antenna and Radio Frequency Systems Engineering
All divisions (Hons/ PhD/ MSc):
  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Information Systems

MORE ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE

Bursaries will be awarded to the value of the following amounts:
Honours students: R75 000 per annum
Masters students: R100 000 per annum, for 2 years
PhD students: R130 000 per annum, for 3 years

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
  • South African citizen
  • Strong academic potential
  • Studying or intend on studying towards one of the aforementioned postgraduate degree qualifications
  • Satisfy the minimum entry criteria for acceptance into one of the aforementioned fields of study at a recognised South African University
  • Interested in working within the space sector
  • Driven and forward thinking
  • Proven financial need
