ABOUT THE COMPANY – SATI
The South African Translators’ Institute (SATI), founded in 1956, is a professional association for all
language practice professionals (including interpreters; translators; proofreaders; editors; copywriters; terminologists; text reviewers and others involved within the language practice industry) within South Africa.

SATI is aiming to establish a multilingual culture in South Africa and developing translation and interpreting in all 11 South African languages, which includes English; Afrikaans; IsiXhosa; IsiZulu; IsiNdebele; Xitsonga; Tshivenda; Sesotho; Setswana; Sepedi and SiSwati.
In 1993, SATI formed a Development Committee, with the goal of collect funds to award to deserving students pursuing their translation or interpreting studies.
ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED & COVERAGE VALUE
The South African Translators’ Institute (SATI) will be awarding 2 bursaries to students pursuing their 2nd/ 3rd/ 4th year of study in Translation, Interpreting Studies or Language Practice.
Bursaries will be awarded to the value of R20 000 each, with students to fund the remainder of their study expenses.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- South African citizen
- Able to work in combinations of the South African official languages
- Studying towards an undergraduate qualification within the translation, interpreting, language field (2nd/ 3rd/ 4th year of study)
- Enrolled in a tertiary institution in South Africa
- Achieved a minimum overall average of 65% for for all language practice subjects in 2019
- Proven financial need
- Have access to additional funding to subsidise the remainder of the tuition fees for the year (proof will be required)
- Do not hold any other current bursary awards/ funding to cover the expenses to be covered by the SATI award
- Good academic record and a high chance of succeeding in your studies
- Likely to make a positive contribution to the profession once graduated
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE BURSARY
Students who meet the minimum eligibility criteria can request a copy of the application form by emailing: office@translators.org.za
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):
- ID document (certified copy)
- Matric certificate (certified copy)
- Academic qualifications (if applicable) (certified copy)
- Full tertiary academic record (certified copy)
- Proof of registration at tertiary institution for the current year of study
- Proof of registration at tertiary institution for 2020
- Proof of access to funds to cover other expenses NOT covered by the SATI bursary
- Details of other awards/ funding received or expect to receive
- Affidavit confirming that you are not in possession of any other bursary awards/ funding that will cover the expenses that the SATI bursary would (only if successfully selected)
